The International Chess Federation reacted to reports of a Spanish tournament’s decision to ban Israeli players from competing with a national flag, confirming that they had not been consulted about the embargo.
The event in Bilbao is scheduled for September 12-18 and is open to everyone around the world. The Times of Israel reported that the organizers sent a letter to seven Israeli players informing them of the decision to ban the country’s flag.
Last week, a massive demonstration against Israeli athletes took place during cycling competitions in Spain, and people demanded their expulsion from the competition.
